The franchise world is evolving, and women are leading the charge. Signarama, a global leader in signage and business solutions, is at the forefront of this movement. Three inspiring women — Maggie Harlow, Allison Kast Eichenberg, and Kelly Mattingly — are proving that women are not only thriving in the wide-format digital printing industry but are also shaping its future.

These award-winning leaders, recognized at the 2024 Women in Wide Format Awards, embody mentorship, leadership, and innovation, helping to pave the way for the next generation of female franchise owners.

Empowering Women in Franchising

Franchising has long been an attractive path for entrepreneurs seeking support and structure in their business journey. At Signarama, franchise ownership is not just about following a proven model — it is about growing a business that makes a difference. The women of Signarama demonstrate this philosophy in action, using their platforms to mentor and uplift others, making franchising a powerful tool for personal and community success.

By highlighting their journeys, we hope to inspire more women to take the leap into business ownership through a Signarama franchise.

Maggie Harlow: A Visionary Leader in Louisville

Maggie Harlow’s entrepreneurial journey began in the automotive industry, where she learned the ropes of business management and customer relations. In 2003, she opened Signarama Downtown Louisville with her husband, and under her leadership, the franchise flourished. In its first year, the business hit $1 million in sales, a testament to Maggie’s expertise and vision.

“It takes persistence, agility, and trusted leadership to fuel the ongoing growth for Signarama Downtown, even in the wake of unexpected setbacks,” she says.

Maggie’s contributions extend far beyond business success. In 2007, she founded the Signs of Support program, which has donated over half a million dollars in signage services to local nonprofits. This initiative reflects her deep commitment to community involvement and giving back.

Maggie is also passionate about mentoring women, fostering leadership, and encouraging risk-taking through organizations like CliffDivers, which supports women in pursuing bold personal and professional changes. Her advocacy for women in business is a cornerstone of her leadership, helping to inspire other female entrepreneurs to start their own journeys.

“As a woman in a male-dominated industry, I actively advocate for opportunity,” Maggie says. “I’m willing to put in the work and invest time and resources to remain at the forefront of trends and innovations that will not only elevate my business but set new industry standards.”

Allison Kast Eichenberg: A Mentor and Innovator in Chandler

Allison Kast Eichenberg did not originally plan for a career in franchising, but after joining her in-laws’ Signarama Chandler franchise in 2007, she embraced the opportunity. Over the years, she took on various roles in the business, from sales and production to accounting and customer service. In 2017, she and her husband became the sole owners of the store, and since then, they have transformed it into a top-performing franchise location.

Allison’s leadership style is rooted in listening, collaboration, and a deep connection with her clients. “To be a strong leader, you must be innovative, flexible, and willing to listen,” says Allison. “I recognize the importance of asking questions and believe that the simple action of asking is the only way to truly understand my customers’ needs, wants, and goals.”

Allison’s dedication to mentorship is evident through her Signs of Hope program, which provides grants for local organizations to use toward signage for events and fundraising efforts. She also mentors new Signarama franchisees, guiding them through the complexities of starting their own businesses.

Her approach to leadership is based on empowering her team and fostering a culture of collaboration. “Through open communication, I’m able to deliver products and services that are impactful and drive business,” she emphasizes. This philosophy has been key to her success in leading a thriving business while supporting the next generation of franchisees.

Kelly Mattingly: A Rising Star in San Antonio

Kelly Mattingly’s entrepreneurial spirit shines through in her success with Signarama San Antonio, a franchise she opened in 2019. Kelly’s store quickly gained recognition, earning the title of Signarama’s Rookie of the Year. Her ability to pivot during challenging times, including navigating the aftermath of natural disasters and business setbacks, showcases her resilience and commitment to excellence.

“While business growth has been ongoing for our NW shop, the massive floods of 2022 resulted in a series of setbacks that we had to work through to survive. This included water damage and break-ins,” she says. “You can’t let roadblocks stand in your way.”

Kelly is not only a successful business owner but also a mentor to new franchisees and an active participant in the San Antonio community. As a board member of several local organizations, including the 100 Women of the Hill Country, Kelly is a key figure in driving positive change within her community while mentoring future business leaders. Her dedication to continuous learning and innovation ensures that her franchise stays at the forefront of the industry.
